Natural Cosmetics makes the skin glow

The ingredients in natural cosmetics are natural and come directly from nature. They contain no chemical additives and support the skin's natural glow. Today, it's crucial to be an informed consumer to understand what's really in the products we use every day.

Exposure to many chemicals in beauty products can lead to serious health problems. The skin is our largest organ and the fabric that covers our entire body, and is there to protect us from all external invaders. The skin is a wonderful mirror because it is a good reflection of the state of the whole body. It is not possible to look at any skin problem in isolation from the digestive system

Nordic skin care

The skin is constantly renewing itself, as it is made up of different layers, and new cells are always formed in the lowest layer. From there, they move layer by layer towards the top layer and eventually leave the body. Collagen plays a very important role in the skin's structure, as it keeps the skin elastic and wrinkle-free. With sufficient moisture, the body can cope with the renewal processes and ensure glowing skin.

Living in northern climates, our skin doesn't benefit from creams during the autumn-winter season because most of them contain water. However, water freezes when the temperature drops and melts when the temperature rises, a fluctuation that can be devastating for the skin. You'll remember when we still had -25C winters and mum asked me to use Nivea greasy cream. I do remember it was kind of really thick and greasy, but it protected the skin wonderfully. Our Nordic skin needs a very different kind of care than, say, southern skin

Just as the advice with food is to eat most of what grows in your home country, the same goes for skin care. Anything made at home is best for you because it's made with local ingredients. Does it seem strange to think that substances are absorbed through the skin in a similar way to the stomach?

What should you keep in mind when buying natural cosmetics?

Have you ever tried to read the ingredients on a bottle of shampoo or a tube of moisturiser to see which ones you'd put on straight away? The more dubious the ingredients, the harder it is to read the label and understand the words. The inevitability, unfortunately, is that when it comes to skincare or cosmetics, we blindly believe that the manufacturer has done the necessary homework. It is easier to pass the buck.

The growing concern is actually about the negative effects of small, regular amounts consumed over a long period of time. For example, shampoo may contain parabens, sodium laureth sulphate, phthalates and other toxic substances

Natural cosmetics, on the other hand, are free of chemicals and use essential oils for fragrance rather than artificial fragrances. An essential oil is a concentrated plant, i.e. it has healing properties and supports your energy field, while artificial fragrances have no value other than chemically sending a signal to your olfactory system

What to look for on the packaging?

When reading the packaging, it's important to look for the label 98%-100% natural. This range is necessary because there are water-based products that still need an additive to preserve. The amount of preservative can be as minimal as possible and, in the natural cosmetics industry, certainly certified safe.

In reality, we should only put on our skin what we would happily put in our mouths, because everything that comes into contact with the skin is absorbed very quickly into our bloodstream.

Ingredients are referred to by their common names (e.g. INCI - International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). In case there is a confusing word, be sure to check it online to be sure of safety. It might also be interesting to know that the list of ingredients is given in descending order of weight at the time of addition.

Advantages of Estonian natural cosmetics

Estonians are a witch people precisely because of their knowledge of the plant world. Indeed, there seem to be more witches among Estonians than among other peoples. Medicinal plants have been growing with us for centuries, and 100 years ago every Estonian knew a thing or two about medicinal plants. In the general picture, we have reached a point where people no longer even dare to go to the blueberry patch, because it might be a worm's plaque that gets into their mouths... People trust more what is mixed up in the laboratory than what has actually been passed down to us historically as folklore.

Plants will communicate with us if we just allow ourselves to listen. Every plant reaches a human being just when he or she is needed. Each one of us is part of a greater whole. The environment we live in affects us and we in turn affect the environment. That's right, in addition to having certain physical qualities, a plant also has an energetic quality, and it will act in your energy field. For example, iron grass is a symbol of willpower - the courage to walk your own path. Some plants are repugnant to some and that is perfectly normal. It is not yet time for this plant's lesson.

Nature's relationship with man is fascinating. Our lives are a constant fluctuation around a centre. A person can be either physically, mentally or energetically balanced or unbalanced. When we are feeling good and in balance, we are happy, energetic and our body is working perfectly. Know how to support yourself naturally.

What should you avoid when buying cosmetics?

  • parabens (traces of paraben have been repeatedly found in breast tumour tissue)
  • propylene/polyethylene glycol (linked to skin, liver and kidney damage)
  • Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (known to cause skin/eye irritation, organ toxicity, possible reproductive mutation and cancer)
  • Synthetic chemical fragrances (linked to asthma, migraine, rash, depression)
  • phthalates (may cause hormonal imbalance and reproductive birth defects)

There are already a number of natural cosmetics brands in Estonia and around the world to make skin feel youthful, nourished and radiant. Choose wisely, your skin will thank you!
