Aljona Suržikova

filmmaker, documentary maker

Aljona Suržikova is an Estonian filmmaker and documentary maker known for her socially acute and deeply personal projects. Her work consistently addresses contemporary societal problems and political discourse, earning recognition at major A-Class international festivals, including Hot Docs, IDFA, and Vision du Réel. In 2014, she received the Best Young Director Award from the Estonian Cultural Endowment for her film Not My Land. Following the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she directed impactful films such as We Are Together and Ukrainian Women, focusing on the human dimensions of the war. Since 2018, Aljona has been running the baby Pram museum in Käru village. In 2024, she got the title of the missioner of the year from Estonian President Alar Karis for the development of the countryside and creating a museum. In 2025, her film, Mõnuste paemurru lugu, was named the Best project in the Harjumaa rural development projects.
