EXCURSION 3. Explore the enchanting old town of Tartu and cruise the River Emajõgi on a historic barge

Join us for a half day tour of Tartu, a city steeped in history and known for its rich heritage in science and education. Settled probably more than 1000 years, invaded nearly a millennium ago by Russian duke Yaroslav the Wise (mentioned in chronicles 1030), Tartu has witnessed the reigns of the bishop, Swedish and Polish kingdoms, and the Russian Empire. The town's original German name was Dorpat. In the 17th century, Swedish king Gustav Adolf bestowed upon it the prestigious Tartu University, making it the first university of the Russian Empire when Estonia merged with it in 1710. Today, Tartu University stands as a testament to almost 400 years of continuous educational excellence.

Our journey leads us to Toomemägi, the medieval heart of Tartu, where the imposing ruins of Tartu Cathedral dominate the lower town, offering stunning panoramic views. The Tartu Cathedral, a massive red-brick structure dating back to the late 13th century, bears the scars of the Livonian War in the 16th century, yet stands as a remarkable piece of history.

Next, we present a unique opportunity to experience the past aboard the wooden trading vessel, the barge "Jõmmu". Step back in time to the Hanseatic era and savor the tranquility of River Emajõgi's picturesque riverbanks. This river gracefully connects Estonia's two largest lakes, Võrtsjärv and Peipsi. For over 600 years, Peipsi barges navigated the inland waters, significantly contributing to the prosperity of several Estonian towns, including the charming city of Tartu.

Join us on this delightful tour as we combine historical exploration with a scenic river cruise, celebrating Tartu's academic legacy and the cultural significance of its waterways.

The price per person 70 EUR includes: service of a tour guide, barge trip, snacks on barge.
