EXCURSION 1. Centre for Limnology, Lake Võrtsjärv and Rubina bog

We start our trip from Tartu and head to the Centre for Limnology on the eastern shore of Lake Võrtsjärv - largest inland lake in Estonia (270 km2). Lake research began in Centre for Limnology of the Estonian University of Life Sciences already in 1950s. Since then various aspects of freshwater research and monitoring has covered. During the visit short overview of science and history of Center for Limnology is given. There is also an option to visit laboratories and explore the harbour area.

We have guided tour in Lake Museum (https://www.visitestonia.com/en/lake-museum) that is situating next door to Center for Limnology. The main exposition is live Estonian freshwater fish. There is a collection of fishing gear, an exhibition of primitive fish, and much more! Currently is possible to see the exhibition: “Amazon River – far and near”, based on materials collected by the staff of the Limnological Center during their expeditions to the Brazilian Amazon. Depending on the weather, we have short trip on Lake Võrtsjärv with study and sauna raft.

After lunch we contiue our trip by bus and head to Rubina bog. The trail goes through forest, followed by a rise to the Rubina bog – one of the nicest and well-preserved bogs in Estonia. There is no boardwalk and we can hike like in old days on peat moss! Rubber boots will be provided. On our way there are several bog pools, where is also posiibility to swim. The Rubina bog offers the opportunity to experience scenic views, silence and pristine nature.
