Dr. Ernesto Alfaro-Moreno
Ernesto Alfaro-Moreno holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), specializing in the toxicological effects of particulate matter. With over three decades of experience, he has led research groups at the National Cancer Institute (Mexico), the Swedish Toxicological Sciences Research Center (Sweden), and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (Portugal), where he currently heads the Nanosafety Group. He is a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT).
His research focuses on nanomaterial–biological interactions, particularly particle-induced toxicity mechanisms, advanced in vitro models, and predictive approaches for human health risk assessment. He has contributed extensively to interdisciplinary initiatives linking nanotechnology, toxicology, and materials science to advance safe-by-design nanomaterials and biomedical technologies. He leads collaborative projects on regulatory-relevant testing strategies and translational safety assessment and has coordinated the iCare project, evaluating the neuronanosafety of advanced materials.
