Riho Altnurme

Riho Altnurme

Professor of Church History, University of Tartu

Riho Altnurme has studied at the University of Tartu, applied mathematics, history and theology, defended his PhD in the year 2000 (dissertation “Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church and Soviet State 1944-1949”), and participated in several international research projects. His research interests include churches, state and society in the second half of the 20th century, history of theology in Estonia, interconfessional relations, and secularisation. Some books: Old Religion, New Spirituality: Implications of Secularisation and Individualisation in Estonia (Brill 2021, editor); Religious Diversity in Europe. Mediating the Past to the Young (Bloomsbury 2022, co-editor with Elena Arigita and Patrick Pasture);  The Birth and Development of the Baltic National Church History Writing (Peter Lang 2025, together with Jaakko Olavi Antila and Jouko Juhani Talonen).
